Jay-z opens up his verse by declaring that he did lots of things. But skips back and begs for God’s forgiveness for the sins he committed. He however owns up to his action by claiming that those alleged evil things he did gave him success because he became the first in many things. Going on to enumerate them, he claims no black rapper touched a billion and made it public until he did it. According to him presently he could only count four black music billionaires and that includes him and three other people with him being the first ever.

In the second eight bars, he goes on to explain how he was deep into the criminal lifestyle. But in the end, he reminisces about the kind of life which he lived by cooking cocaine and selling it but still managed to leave the dope game without falling into the hands of the law. He marvels at the fact that he actually made money off the wrong life and still managed to get his name listed in Forbes magazine as one of the richest legitimate hustlers in the world. He terms this act: “take the dope public” while claiming that he used to be a corner boy in the streets of New York low-end hoods selling drugs but upgraded to become a boss in a legitimate enterprise with a corner office in a tall skyscraper in high-end New York City.

The next set of 8Bars has him going after haters who think he is faking his lifestyle, especially about what he claims to be in terms of drugs. He declares that he is actually what he said he is and was because for everyone who chooses the drug business, it’s like marriage and it is till death do them part. But claims that the lifestyle he is enjoying now is a dream of many drug dealers who are still deep down in the game. Poking fun at new rappers who claim to be drug dealers, he calls them naive. He lyrically paints them as naive drug dealers who try to talk exotic (claiming to know much about the drug game), but they know so little that they do not even know a place called “Baham”...

Another clear improvement from Apollo Album is his general creativity and production approach. Prior to the playboy album, 80% of his songs were produced by “Pheelz” who was like the official producer of YBNL when he was signed. While the production was top-notch, the problem is, that familiarity may affect the creative process because some details may be overlooked in Apollo Album. To correct that defect, Fireboy opted for Elven (11) producers within and outside Nigeria. Kicking it off with the works veteran music producers Shizzi and Kolten did in Peru, he worked with Zaki Aje Amujei on “Compromise” and “Afro-Highlife” which for me are one of the best songs on this playlist. Furthermore, he works with Phantom on Diana, Pprime on sounds like “Having Fun” which is a Reggae sound, and “Bandana” which is an Afropop makossa song. In summary, he employed the services of usual faces in his music carrier to make him better.

Finally, the last tile piece and completed work of art is Fireboy’s choice of who to feature on this project. For me employing Mavin/Jonzi World Records Afrohindi Ace star: Rema was one of his best choices. Rema brought his Indian Hindi-vocals to “compromise” giving the song a dreamy and emotion soundgasm. Chris Brown is more of an Afrobeats artist now than an RnB/Soul musician is also a unique star who Empire and YBNL did well to secure his services for FireBoy. Chris’s ability to understand the tempo and message “Diana” gave it that sound light while the dancehall rap of Shenseea gave it a new kind of bump. I will like Empire and YBNL to work on very good visuals for the songs on this album.

In songs that talk about self-confidence and life hustle, he sings about how blessed and sure the guy is in the rap atmosphere in Nigeria. For example in the song in which he features BNXN aka Buju, titled “Oil”, he raps about how blessed he is at the place he is now. According to him, he has oil on his head (meaning he has grace beyond measure). “The Guy” is a song that uses to describe how he has been able to make himself the main person interested as regards the rap music craft in Nigeria. Revealing that he is self-motivated because of his quest to make the next meal, he declares himself the guy (meaning a kind of sure plug) as regards rap music.” Bigger” is a song that features Olamide and Nas, and it talks about the social issue of wealth and fame as a bitter-sweet experience. According to him while he lived his early life praying and hustling to make it big and beat the problem of poverty only to discover a bigger problem when he became rich and famous.

In social issues-based songs, MI created two songs with Ossi Grace and Lord Vino. In a song titled “Crazy”, he works with Ossi Grace to talk about the negative effect of Twitter and general bullies. According to him, the reason people are always hating and calling it savage is that the generation that gave birth to them did not really know love and respect-hence giving birth to a generation of haters. Working with Lord Vino he created “Soft Life Tony”. This is a song that is two-sided lyrically inspired song. The song on one hand praises the hustle and finesse of Tony Elumelu (The founder and CEO of United Bank for Africa) and shows every day being a legitimate hustling billionaire. While on the other hand, he uses it to inspire himself and other legitimate hustlers who wake up early to chase money and live a soft rich life.

It was an uncommon event to have Asa be in Nigeria for so long-but with this fifth studio album and its sound direction, it is clear why the France based Nigerian musician has been in the country. Following her social media trend since 2020, Asa have been compiling a catalogue of music which obviously had popular Nigeria acts working with her. To of the list of the pop stars are the Cavemen and Wurld but the album, which is titled ‘V’ had bigger surprises.
